Joy, happiness, Art and MBS shows

March 31, 2009 tonypinfold Comments off

So that’s the Brentwood show over for another year and very good it was as well. I would like to thank everyone who came to the show and all those that made it possible. A big thank you to all who purchased my prints as always, we (my wife and I) are very grateful for you choosing to take my work into your homes and work places, I hope it brings you many years of enjoyment.

The life of an artist is seldom a path to riches, likewise people who believe that putting on or taking part in MBS shows big or small is some fast track to monetary nirvana are sadly very deluded. Even in my short time on the circuit (two years), I have seen many people come and go, organizers because all they thought they had to do was book a hall, put up a few signs and place an add in the paper and the world would come flocking. Vendors because they wanted a constant income, or their expectations where simply totally unrealistic. We have attended fairs where only 15 people have come through the door all day and I have also been at events where many thousands have arrived. One year a show may be a financial failure the next it could be beyond your most optimistic expectations. With all fairs/exhibitions I attend if I make my stand money back I’m a happy man anything else is just a blessing. I spent most of my life up and till 40 doing things for financial reward and it failed time and time again to bring me any form of happiness.

On good days people may look at me on my stand and think wow that looks like the thing to do, but I know my works commercial limitations as it only appeals to a very select group of people and that is fine. As a creative person I can think of nothing more horrific than producing art just to make money.

My view on life is If you don’t feel predominately happy about what you do don’t do it! No if’s, but’s or maybes. If you are in fear of stopping your non happiness because of what that may bring you should think on that, what would it bring you? More unhappiness!!!.

I’m sure we all know people who moan all the time about their lot in life but in reality love what they do. Until you really sit and listen to your still quiet voice and find out what would bring you joy you maybe over looking the fact that what you are doing right now is really is what you love. Like wise you may have all the trappings of success and believe yourself to be ‘happy’ but awake one day and be totally miserable.

Often it is the case what may bring you happiness may well have the opposite effect on family and friends then you have to decide if your purpose in life is to experience happiness or simply make others happy. You need to seek you best and most truthful answer to all such questions, as the sooner you discover your truth the better the world in general will be.

I believe no one on earth in truth was born to be a beast of burden to others and while that may be the role you chose to act out this is still your decision. Joy, freedom, fear oppression in fact all emotional states are all mind sets and have little to do with what is happing in the exterior world. So deciding to be in joy with what you do, with what you buy and how you live is usually the most important step. Only you can make up your own mind, as hard as it may seem the term helpless victim is more often used as an excuse than a statement of fact.

Some other things that may seem obvious to you but are generally not understood are:-Any one that gains by the depriving of others (rich or poor) via any form of theft, copyright infringement, etc is simply sowing the seeds for a very rotten harvest some time in the not to distant future. Also what may appear to be the hardest jobs in the world are not hard to those that are in a state of joy while doing them.

As the saying goes, “follow your bliss” doing anything else is simply setting up problems and regrets in the future for you and ever one you claim to care for , isn’t it?

My truth ‘Life just is’

March 25, 2009 tonypinfold Comments off

One day in late 2006, I unintentionally created an image which I would later call ‘Oppressed’. This dark and sinister work seemed to sum up my depressing and unfulfilled life. The image which was created from some photos I had taken while on holiday in Scotland seemed to be depicting a desperate and disfigured creature being pushed down into a pit by two cage doors. This picture which echoed the work of artists like Giger did very little to cheer my mood. In fact some days later I was just about to delete it, when I was inspired for some reason to look at the work from a positive perspective, such a mind set was alien to me but I thought I may as well give it a go.

This time, as I looked upon the work I chose to see a creature breaking free from a pit of despair. Was this lizard skinned being at a transitional stage of it’s life? Soon to break free from this cocoon and then turn into something beautiful like a butterfly. It all sounded highly unlikely to me and very airy fairy and then I had one of those ‘aha’ moments that would shatter the way I viewed life forever. My first negative reaction to the work was no more right or wrong than this new positive theory. It dawned on me that I had no clue what the image was really saying because I couldn’t view it without all the filters and programming my life’s experiences had piled on me.

For me this was big, I mean really big, it meant that for the past 40 years I had been simply seeing the world from my perception through a set of distorted lenses and not as it really was, I wondered did anyone really know what life was like? I couldn’t see how they could, I realized that we are all unknowingly programmed from birth not in some dark and sinister way but mostly by well meaning family members and friends who are simply passing on to us their own distorted view of the world.

Slowly as we grow up our fanciful ideas and highest aspirations are hammered out until we become beings that are far less than we should be. Ultimately we metaphorically plugged ourselves into one of the many different but ultimately limiting thought process and usually stay with them until we die. I realised simply by my perceptions I had shut my self off from thousands of opportunities in life and disconnected myself from reality (whatever that was).

I decided that maybe while viewing the world from a positive out look was simply replacing one perception with another I should give it a go as playing role of the dark sarcastic and negative artist had not really achieved anything, other than bringing me more things to be sarcastic and negative about.

A positive out look could indeed improve my life experience but I still had to keep my mind open to all probabilities. Some days later I tried to create another thought provoking image but the more I tried the less I achieved …It wasn’t until about a month later that I created my next image. What I didn’t know then that I do now is that these images can’t be created on demand, I have to be disconnected from a intention to create anything in particular. I have been asked in the past do I take any kind of mind altering drugs the answer to that is no, I think my mind is altered enough as it is. My next two images where both still rather dark but none the less helpful. Torment forced me to challenge my closed views on religion and god and find out why people believed what they did and why it was so important for them.

Then in my third work I embraced the fact I had bipolar I saw that while others may see it as a disadvantage it enable me to see the world through a whole gamut of emotions sometime all in the same day or even the same hour. I decided that weather or not bipolar was a gift or a curse it was just another of lifes filters I would have clear away as best as I could in order to really see.

In the following months and years I learnt to peer above the wall of conventional thinking more and more. I lay my belief that science had everything figured out to one side and dived into as may different views and theories of life and beyond, as possible. I decided to take the stance that all was possible until proven otherwise, and once I truly embraced that view my love for life increased as did my sense of wonder. I engaged people and read books which had views of the world that I never even heard of, some appeared to help and enhance my mental and spiritual growth others didn’t and some I have to admit I couldn’t even comprehend.

Two years down the road I have discovered this… only you can find your truth and it only seems to happen when you are prepared to question everything in your life and I mean everything. I believe you limit your growth as long as you say transfixed by any single storyline. You can only grow and start writing your own a script, so to speak once you break free from conventional lines of thought.

At this point I feel compelled to point out my views of my art and life are only that, mine. They are based on what I feel and think and what makes sense to me after much personal contemplation. I do not declare them right for everyone or anyone other than me …. This is not me trying sound like some egoless teacher, it’s simply that as I look around me it is the need to be right that seems to have brought so much dis-ease to the planet.

I’m very happy to be wrong but in saying that I reject the concept that anyone on earth is perfect that anyone has all the answers. I feel the world can only really be improved or even saved once we all discuss what we believe, but united in our ultimate unknowingness, Just think of the wonderful dialogues we could have if we didn’t need to be right all the time.

Many thousands of people have viewed my work over the past two years and nearly all of them have had come to different conclusions about it, some have hated it and even been scared by what they have seen, while others have been moved to tears of joy and placed my works at the very centre of their lives

My art like life is what you make it, It welds the power all modern art does, the power to force you to make up your own mind and use your own judgment something, many people go months and years without doing, Society its seems does not really embrace the concept of people who think for themselves.

I have found that contemplation of anything be it art, a rose or even the night sky is a very powerful process, for it pulls you back into this moment in time and away from the problems of the past and the fears of the future. It is an ancient concept but one that should be repeated again and again that when you are focused on the now you are in alignment with the universe which only ever knows the Now.

Once you begin to reduce mind chatter you are able to discover what truly matters to you. Also you may find that any negativity you have fades as it can’t live without the reference points of past and future. During these times of focused thought I have seen wonder in the most over looked things and seen that all the past wisdoms are right to point to the fact that the answers for life are within as all, happiness, peace and a love for life can never truly be found in the exterior world. You can travel across the globe in search of truth or enlightenment but unless you open your mind and limit your judgements you will know and feel no more than if you had just stayed in bed.

I have reach a wonderful point in my life, where I realize life is not some problem that must be solved or a test that must be passed, life ‘just is’ and all the judgements and knee-jerk reactions are purely the work of mans over active mind. The power that drives and connects everyone and everything call it what you wish does not find imperfection in anything. I believe this powers is non dualistic and free from the limits of the human mind. Unlike others in the spiritual community I do not have any interest in ghosts or contacting the dead. I have never had any experience of anything paranormal and have no interest in knowing the future or reliving past lives. Yet I do believe the universe is driven by this unseen energy and that this energy connects us all as one. I do consider we are all on a spiritual path whether we like that description or not. I believe we are born into a dualistic world and our challenge is to overcome that limited view of life and see that despite our best efforts we will never see the full picture from this tiny spot in space.

It seems to me the world is on information overload, I sense that more and more people are being crushed by a continual fear based media.  Hence the real reason the use of drink and drugs is so high in the western world. We need to understand that all this bad news is simply one perception of the world. I think it is vital we look within for peace and reconnect with our true spirit. We truly gain nothing if we allow ourselves to become slaves to this destructive monolog of despair, watching the news constantly to see how bad it all is, much like moths to the flame.

Reconnecting with the stillness of the natural world is one answer, but it is not easy for many city dwellers nature may as well be an alien world. I believe unless people can rediscover the simplistic wonders of life they will continually overlook the miracles of the world on a  never ending and totally fruitless search for a point to life. The question is can Mankind ever let go of it’s need solve its own existence and in so doing extended its existence indefinitely.

This weekend I will be showing and selling my art work at our first prime impact event of the year. I always enjoy these events as they offer a whole host of stands,workshops/lectures and stage demonstrations. If you have never been to this kind of event and live in the area then this is one of the biggest if not the biggest show of the year for Essex. The free stage shows including Tim wheater, Barbara Meiklejohn-free and Drageonfly moon are always wonderful and worth the entrance fee in themselves. Are you coming to the realization that life has to be more than work, TV and trips to superstores then why not pop along, you may well discover a new way to live or simply a new way of looking at the life you already have. If you come to the show with a open heart and mind then I have no doubt you will enjoy your day, if you come with a bagful of perceptions you will not only limit your experience but also sadly you will find exactly what you expect to.

Art for Contemplation

March 20, 2009 tonypinfold Comments off

I am very pleased to announce that my new book ‘Art for Contemplation’ is now available online from the publishers Blurb.

As I have become more and more aware of the power of just being, I wanted to produce a simple but powerful book to reflect that. In this book I have dispensed with the need for endless pages of intellectual information. This is as the title suggest a book of my art for Contemplation, It contains 69 visionary works from my 1st image ‘oppressed’ created in November 2006 up to ‘Sentinel to the soul’ created in January of this year. Obviously the book is in full colour and each image gets its own page. Also in the book is a full page print of my ‘One’ Logo, my daily mantra and a few other smaller landscape images.

Technical info on the book:-
Hardcover with a Dust Jacket and durable library binding
Size 8 ×10 inch (20cm×25cm)
80 Pages printed on the printers Premium Paper
I can assure you that the quality of the printing meets my high standard and the colour reproduction in all the copies I have seen are as I intended.

Price £39.95 + p&p (Click here to purchase)
I thought a long time about the price of this book as I wanted to offer the highest quality book that the printers produced, while still making it finically viable for both you and me. When you consider up and till now the only way to obtain all these prints was to buy 69 8’’x6’’prints at a cost of £345 the book as achieved all the goals I have set it.

All the works below are included in the book

I thought you would like to read the introduction of the book :
Ever since the creation of my first visionary PhotoArt work ‘Oppressed’ in late 2006 I have been challenging my perceptions on life. With the motivation of the images in this book I have discovered more about my world in the last two and a half years than the whole of the last forty. I wanted to produce a book in which you could immerse yourself in unconditional contemplation, to be able to view my work as I did when I first produced them without judgement or commentary.

Each works meaning and title comes to me after the image is finished and never the other way around. The pages in this book maybe the first time in years you have been faced with the liberating experience of making up your own mind on something. This may feel a little disquieting to the logical or ego driven mind that wants everything to be explained.

I urge you to see my work your way. Some images may bring you joy, others sadness but whatever your reaction question it. Seek to understand why you feel this way and then challenge that perception and see if maybe the image can be seen in a different light.

I believe that life is a drama, a dance, it is never ending and has no up or down, no good or bad these are just man made concepts. As soon as we introduce Dualism into the mix we are no longer living in alignment with the universe that ‘just is’. It favours cold no more than hot, dark no more than light. It dwells only in the now and can not judge events because of that.

Within us all is a deep knowing and truth that is covered by misinformation and negative perceptions. Unless we are brave enough to look above the wall of conventional thinking mankind will repeat its darkest moments again and again.

At the back of this book you can view each work with its title in the order it was created, not as it appears in the book. I ask you to only look at this once you have reached your own conclusions and don’t panic if my title does not resonate with your view of my work.

You will find no explanations to the works here or how they are created as that may distort your contemplation process.

If you need more answers please view my website www.tonypinfold.com

I thank you for your interest in my work and hope it will inspire you as it has me. So open your heart and mind and heal your spirit but most of all enjoy what you discover.

In Joy, Tony

Dedicated to everyone who has ever tried to spread love, oneness and compassion.

About the printers Blurb

As an artist I like to remain in as much control of my work as possible, so signing with a large publisher where I would simply become a cog in a wheel was never an option for me. Up until the creation of companies like lulu and blurb it was virtually impossible to self publish full colour books without A crippling finical out lay.

So I am very grateful for blurb and the fact that they take care to the printing and worldwide shipping of this book and allow me to concentrate on what I do best being a artist/photographer.
I guess the only draw back with blurb is that every book is printed on demand so book take longer to arrive. I would also point out that in my experience that if you dislike waiting for things you should opt for the fast shipping method this also enables you to in most case track the order. The other options are much slower.

An eco consideration
Blurb book are printed in different locations around the world so this helps cut down on the books air miles at the time of this article Orders placed from the UK are for example shipped from the Netherlands which is obviously a lot nearer that blurb headquarters in the USA.

Finally
If you have enjoyed my work over the years via the Internet and could never decide on what prints to buy, I believe you will be very happy with this publication from blurb. My wife and I are always extremely grateful of your financial support through the purchasing of this book or any of the prints on my website it helps ensure what all artists dream of total creative freedom

As always you can still purchase single prints starting at just £5+ p&p on my website

Mind body and soul exhibition 14th/15th Norwich

March 16, 2009 tonypinfold Comments off

I’m sitting here typing this in gratitude after the most fantastic weekend show.  I’d just like to thank all of you that came to the Mind body and soul exhibition at the Hewett School in  Norwich .  Saturday was a buzzing day, at one point the energy at the fair was over whelming and I lost my focus with a couple of people, so sorry if that was you. Later on in the day the show became calmer, the new stand (ver 5) worked out very well Just a few adjustments have to be made before the brentwood show.

Sunday was a much calmer day with a good steady stream of visitors.  The fair was very well organized and the public entrance fee for one day was a reasonable £1.50 (I wish more fairs where so sensibly priced). I’m sure we will be back in October, So if you live in the Norwich area and want to do something different why not come a have a look around then. I’m off to enjoy my clove cinnamon and Ginger Tea. I brought from the stand opposite ‘Purple Mist’

Have a great day everyone, hope to see you all soon

Spiritual Soup

March 14, 2009 tonypinfold Comments off

I know that those who follow all kinds of ‘new/old age spiritualities’ can at times feel a little alienated and alone, having nothing like the support networks organized religion enjoys. That said I personally believe that is as it should be, as self discovery by its very name is not a group activity. Learning to embrace solitude and silence even within a domestic setting is all a part of the journey to inner truth.
As I have observed what tends to happen at the start of a spiritual awakening is people become totally obsessed with seeking answers for the human dilemma. Overwhelmed by questions, these people soon find a teacher that they resonate with who can feed their needs. Then over the following weeks, months, years they turn into mini me’s of their chosen guru, spouting chapter and verse of their latest books and teachings.

During this time of awakening we can all intellectually learn a great deal. Sadly we often fail to feel or act on what we have discovered.  Many times all that happens in a spiritual awakening is a person simply ends up replacing their traditional thought systems with something more exotic and perplexing. While there is nothing wrong with this, it does seem a bit like over looking the ocean in favour of another rock pool.
I believe the only way to truly develop spiritually is to avoid becoming too transfixed with any particular ways of thinking. It is important to keep your mind open, trying to reduce ones need to judge people and situations. Ultimately this is the complete opposite to what we are taught by a society which requires we have an opinion on everything. We have been raised to see the world through a dualistic lens of good and bad, right and wrong. It is thought often too much of it that stunts our expansion into wholeness. It is only when we can empty our brain (not in a zombie like fashion) that we can maybe begin to understand. I’m afraid this is where my ability to explain what I mean in words hits a road block so forgive me if this is unclear.

Let me try an analogy: -
You are sitting at the foot of a huge dam one day. You see water trickling through a hole. This is a little worrying but you manage to plug it. Then you see another one you plug that. Then another and another, you are becoming more and more frantic, not to mention tired. Eventually the realisation dawns that despite all you best efforts this dam is coming down and there is not a damn thing (sorry) you can do about it. Despite what you may intellectually believe reading this at this point and maybe for just a few seconds the fear will subside, you will relinquish your need to try to fix the situation: – you will simply be. You will blend into the fabric of life. You will experience the way life is non-dualistic, not judgementally and without a care. At this point you will become enlightened (free from the weight of life).
What does that have to do with immersing your self in spiritual information?
Well, at first, every bit of information you come by you will try to make sense of: – you will judge it, reject or embrace it. As more and more information comes to you, the less you will be able to comfortably process. Contradictions may appear, concepts that you can’t even understand will frustrate you. How can you judge what you don’t understand? Slowly it will become clear, the more you learn the less you know. You probably believed to ‘win’ at life you had to wrestle the vastness of time, space and everything into a small and manageable concept. It will become apparent sooner or later that this is not possible. Your mind is the dam, life is the water.

As you learn more and more, you puncher your minds concepts until the reality of the situations dawn. You can’t control life, it controls you and as for comprehending everything, trying to ‘fix it’ is just totally pointless. It is at this realisation a deep fear many take hold, even anger. You stand in the field of life waving your fist at the sky tossing profanity after profanity at the universe, despairing at the believed realization that in the vastness of space is nothing.

Finally you may shut up, fall to your knees and have a flash of insight. (For we know all truth lies within) You are not a no-thing, you are apart of everything, life is non-dualistic not judgementally and without a care.
Below is the spiritual soup that I offer up for you. It consists of as many different views of life as I could fit on a page. You could spend hours here so take as much as you like, whenever you like and don’t panic it’s 100% fat free.
